The reason many people pray to St. Anthony for the return of lost or stolen thing is because of his own experience where his book psalms that was taken from him Prayer eventually lead to the return of the book by a thieving novice.
The terms "St. Anthony Bread" is used for offerings made in thanksgiving to God for blessings received through intercession of St. Anthony. The bread can alos be given for the education of priests. Parents also make a gift for the poor after placing a newborn child under the protection of St. Anthony. Some churches bless small loaves of bread on the feast of St. Anthony and give them to parishioners.
A famous miracle goes back to 1263, when it is said a child drowned near the Basilica of St. Anthony which was still being built. The mother promised that if the child was restored to her she would give for the poor an amount of corn equal to the child’s weight. Her prayer was answered and the boy returned to life.
Another event is where Anthony was praying deep into the night when suddenly the room was filled with light more brilliant than the sun. Jesus then appeared to St. Anthony under the form of a little child. This was witnessed by the Lord of Chatenauneuf, attracted by the brilliant light that filled his house, was drawn to witness the vision but promised to tell no one of it until after St. Anthony’s death.
In Italy, France, Portugal and Spain, St. Anthony is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. His statue is sometimes placed in a shrine on the ship’s mast.
Travellers by sea and vacationers pray that they may be kept safe by St. Anthony’s intercession in reference to his journey to preach the gospel in Morocco which was cut short by a severe sickness. The sickness eventually went away and allowed him to spread the Good News throughout all of Europe.
Another story says that in 1647 Father Erastius Villani of Padua was returning by ship to Italy from Amsterdam. The ship was caught in a violent storm at sea and was in danger of sinking. Father Erastius encouraged everyone to pray to ask for St. Anthony's intercession. He threw some pieces of cloth that had touched a relic of St. Anthony into the heaving seas. The storm subsided and the ship was saved!
